How MBUST came to existence

The Path We Treaded

Nepal National Institute of Engineering and Technology as world-class university was conceived around 2015 which was a GON initiative supported by ADB. However, that initiative was continued as Madan Bhandari University of Science and Technology (MBUST) in later years.

Madan Bhandari University of Science and Technology Development Board (MBUSTDB) was established on April 23, 2019 by the Government of Nepal with an objective of carrying out preparatory activities for establishment of Madan Bhandari University of Science and Technology. Key responsibilities of the Board, among others, include;

a. preparation of the legal framework for the university;
b. identification of research areas and academic programs, which could make significant contribution to national development;
c. development of physical infrastructure for the university; and
d. identification of professionals of high caliber wishing to contribute to development of the university.

The Madan Bhandari University of Science and Technology Act was promulgated by the parliament in August 3, 2023.

The Government nominated the trustees of the university in May 16, 2023.

MBUST initiated the graduate level academic programs in November 2023.

The MBUSTDB worked hard to achieve the followings:

  1. Draft MBUST bill and peruse it for parliamentary approval.
  2. Identified and acquired land for the university: The land for the university has been identified/acquired at Chitlang, Thaha Municipality, Makwanpur District, Bagmati Province and Panikharka/Monobudha Municipalities, Kavre District, Bagmati Province. Construction of physical facilities are underway at Chitlang.
  3. Constituted Research Area identification committee for identifying and developing research thematic areas.
  4. Appoint internationally acclaimed Honorary Chair Professors for support to develop academic programs and confirm the research areas:
    a. Professor Seeram Ramkrishna, Everest Chair, National University of Singapore
    b. Prof. Ning Yan, Chair Professor, Forest Biomaterials Science and Engineering, Toronto University, Canada
    c. Prof. Andrae Ronald Van Amstel, Chair Professor, Organic Agriculture, Wageningen University, The Netherlands
    d. Prof. Suresh Manandhar, Chair Professor, Artificial Intelligence, York University, UK
  5. Hiring Subject experts: More than 8 subject experts were hired as consultants to work on academic programs and curriculum and development of research infrastructure.
  6. Infrastructure Development: Physical infrastructure development was initiated and by the time university was constituted, optimal facilities and services were available to start the academic programs.
